Third One

Blog Entry 3:

“Whatever anyone says something is, it isn’t.” (Powers 482) This phrase means “there is a difference
between the world of events and the world of words about events (Powers 482)”. Postman and Powers
claim there are differences between stationary pictures, moving pictures, and language.  And what you
see on television is not always something you can believe.
The language aspect is just the thought that no two reporters use the same exact wording. There are
different statements that can use no judgment, or a statement that can use description, or a statement
that is used based on observation. Yet, the audience can interpret all the same thing out of three
different statements.
Gearing towards pictures, “Their vocabulary is limited to concrete representation (Powers 483).” A
picture doesn’t represent an idea, and in a picture you can only represent a piece of subject.  However,
moving pictures “may bridge the gap by juxtaposing images, symbols, sound and music (Powers 483).”
Moving pictures can show various amount of emotion and different aspects of an actual image.
The problem that Postman and Powers have with things such as newscast is because of the issue that
nothing is repeated the same. Which can lead to things being misinterpreted and therefore, can be far
from the truth. I do, agree. It goes back to the game of telephone. The concept of that game is to show
that something said on one end while end up completely different on the other end.

Second Week

Blog Entry: Week Two

The considered video is focused on a little boy playing in his imaginative world. He’s dressed in a Darth Vader character and is roaming around the house trying to impose his superpowers and becomes frustrated because nothing seems to be working. The Darth Vader costume is a symbolic character today in America, even though it heralds from 30 years ago, it is a part of the popular show Star Wars and has been passed down for many generations. In today’s culture, it is known that the young adolescence, imitates today’s television, and it’s represented in the video has he tries to use the Darth Vader powers. The video also shows the relationship between the child and his mother and the relationship between the child and his father. The mother doesn’t seem to be too interested in the child’s game showing the mother to play a non-imaginative role. When the father arrives he gives into the boy and makes his car light up playing into the game, showing a form of play in the father; son relationship. The video is a symbolic piece of the family interaction in the 21st century. Family time becomes limited and children are off playing alone. For just the two second interaction with the son and the boy to be such a significant moment in the video, shows that the family interaction should be stronger today.  (235)

Hip-Hop Discrimination

Blog Entry 4:
“These rap artists influence the way they dress,” he continues. “They look like hoochie mamas, not like they’re coming to class. Young men with pants fashioned below their navel. Now, I used to wear bell-bottoms, but I learned to dress a certain way if I was negotiating the higher education maze. I had to trim my afro.” (Evelyn 1).  It’s simple.  There is a time and place for everything. Do you wear your swimsuit to a job interview?  Do you wear a leotard for a dance routine to your soccer practice? Society is set up with formality. School is considered to be a place of learning, nothing else. An inappropriate dress code is not a far stretch.  Dress appropriately when attending class. Your clothing should not be a distraction to others. If your underwear is hanging out of your pants it can be considered a distraction. However, I do not believe that teachers have the right to stereotype students, such as Hinmon. He is coming from an environment where he is use to dressing the way he does. It is their job to perhaps suggest a more appropriate dress code rather than shun him. The display of someone’s outward appearance does not relate to their inner intelligence. Therefore, I am back and forth on this topic. As spoken, in this piece, it is a different generation and instead of placing students into category, people should take the time to understand an individual rather than judge them.  You are the product of your environment.
