Blog Entry 3:
“Whatever anyone says something is, it isn’t.” (Powers 482) This phrase means “there is a difference
between the world of events and the world of words about events (Powers 482)”. Postman and Powers
claim there are differences between stationary pictures, moving pictures, and language. And what you
see on television is not always something you can believe.
The language aspect is just the thought that no two reporters use the same exact wording. There are
different statements that can use no judgment, or a statement that can use description, or a statement
that is used based on observation. Yet, the audience can interpret all the same thing out of three
different statements.
Gearing towards pictures, “Their vocabulary is limited to concrete representation (Powers 483).” A
picture doesn’t represent an idea, and in a picture you can only represent a piece of subject. However,
moving pictures “may bridge the gap by juxtaposing images, symbols, sound and music (Powers 483).”
Moving pictures can show various amount of emotion and different aspects of an actual image.
The problem that Postman and Powers have with things such as newscast is because of the issue that
nothing is repeated the same. Which can lead to things being misinterpreted and therefore, can be far
from the truth. I do, agree. It goes back to the game of telephone. The concept of that game is to show
that something said on one end while end up completely different on the other end.
